Press Release: PHENOTYPIC ANNOUNCES TWO NEW RELEASES FROM THE ST. LAWRENCE STRING QUARTET

HAYDN & KORNGOLD

AUGUST 1, 2023

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Phenotypic Recordings is pleased to announce the release of two new recordings by the St. Lawrence String Quartet —the last with cofounder and violinist Geoff Nuttall.

Both albums capture magnificent performances by this distinguished ensemble: Joseph Haydn’s Op. 76, No. 3 "Emperor", Op. 76, No. 4 "Sunrise" and Korngold's towering Piano Quintet in E Major, Op. 15 with longtime SLSQ collaborator and friend Stephen Prutsman, piano.

Produced and engineered by Mark Willsher, they were recorded at Bing Concert Hall, Stanford University, just months before Geoff Nutall's tragic death.

The St. Lawrence String Quartet, hailed as one of the world's leading ensembles, has long championed the works of Haydn. According to The New Yorker, “…no other North American quartet plays the music of Haydn with more intelligence, expressivity, and force…”

In the words of the quartet’s violist, Lesley Robertson, “Geoff’s playing throughout is transcendent--vulnerable, daring, ecstatic. His opening of the ‘Sunrise’ takes my breath away... and serves now as a poignant epitaph for this extraordinary man.”

Stephen Prutsman reflected, "Geoff was perhaps the most unique musical talent I've ever had the privilege to know, and his love and joy for playing was infectious, never-ending. That same enthusiasm for life and music lives on in these albums and within me to this day."
